Trimming and Space Values in Integrator

This article explains how Jedox Integrator handles leading, trailing, and blank space values across extracts and transforms.

Trimming

Jedox Integrator automatically trims all column values from the result of an extract or transform. No specific configuration is required. This means

  • All leading and trailing blank values are removed.
  • If a column value consists only of one or more blank characters, it is trimmed to a single blank value.

This logic avoids additional transformation steps on columns that would otherwise be required in the context of OLAP. (Dimension names cannot begin or end with a space character; see Naming Conventions for Jedox Objects)

Special case in FieldNormalization

An exception to this rule is the FieldNormalization transform. Because FieldNormalization isn't a Field Transform function, its output isn't subject to the automatic trimming described above, beyond the trim already applied to the input value before FieldNormalization receives it. If the input value contains spaces immediately before or after the delimiter, those spaces are kept in the resulting values.

Example 1

Delimiter: ,

Input Value: 12, 34 (with leading space value after delimiter)

Result:

Column 1: 12

Column 2: 34 (includes leading space value)

Example 2

Delimiter: ,

Input Value: 12,34 (with leading space value before first character)

Result:

Column 1: 12

Column 2: 34 (leading space trimmed)

Space values

Use the keyword #space to create a column value that consists of one or more blank characters. Use #space multiple times to create a value with several blank characters.

The following Integrator components support #space:

Component Parameter(s)
CSV file connection Delimiter
ConstantTable extract

Any value

Concatenation function Delimiter and template
Lookup function Default value
Map function Input value (to map the blank input value)
Replace function Replacement
Split function Separator
TableAggregation transform Concatenation separator
TableNormalization transform Concatenation separator
CSV load Default value
